Rewarded Video eCPM: What Actually Drives Your Rate

Mobadly Media Buying Team · · 8 min read

Ask five publishers what rewarded video pays and you will hear numbers that differ by an order of magnitude. The gap is not luck. Your eCPM is the market's price on a specific set of qualities — and most of those qualities are levers you control.

What the market is actually pricing

Advertisers buy rewarded inventory for one thing: guaranteed completed attention from a user who can still say no. Your eCPM is their collective bid on the quality of that attention in your app. Every signal that predicts post-install value moves the price: who your users are, where they live, how engaged they are, and what historically happened to the ads they watched.

This is why eCPM comparisons between apps mislead. A casual game with a tier-1 audience and a utility with tier-3 traffic both show rewarded video; they are selling different products. The useful question is not what others earn — it is what drives your rate and which of those drivers you can move.

Geography and audience quality

GEO mix is the loudest driver. Advertiser budgets concentrate where purchasing power concentrates, so tier-1 impressions carry premium bids and tier-3 impressions carry volume prices. You cannot relocate your users — but you can stop averaging them. Per-GEO reporting shows which markets carry your revenue; per-GEO floor pricing stops premium impressions from selling at blended rates.

Audience engagement is the quieter driver, and it compounds. Advertisers track what users do after watching: do they install, open, retain, pay? An app whose rewarded viewers consistently become valuable users sees demand — and bids — rise over time. An app whose viewers farm rewards and vanish sees its rates decay as buyers' algorithms learn. Your rate card is, in a real sense, your audience's reputation.

Placement design moves the price

Where you offer rewarded video changes what it earns. An offer at a genuine value moment — out of lives, locked content, a meaningful upgrade — gets watched by users who care, and their post-ad behavior shows it. The same format wallpapered across every screen trains users to treat it as noise, completion quality slides, and advertiser algorithms respond with lower bids within weeks.

Completion rate is the metric advertisers watch most closely on rewarded inventory, because a completed view is the product they bought. Protect it: make the reward worth the thirty seconds, place the offer where users want value, and resist adding offers faster than your economy can absorb them. One strong offer point outearns four weak ones — and keeps earning next quarter. More on structuring this on our rewarded monetization page.

Demand density and fill

Your rate also reflects competition for your impressions. Thin demand means your placements clear at whatever the one bidder offers; dense demand means advertisers bid against each other. Direct advertiser relationships and networks with real buying operations raise the floor under your eCPM in a way that long reseller chains cannot — every intermediary between the advertiser's budget and your payout takes a margin and adds latency to price discovery.

Ask any monetization partner where the demand comes from. If the answer is an unnamed chain of exchanges, your true clearing price is being set somewhere you cannot see. If the answer includes direct campaigns with named verticals, you are closer to the money. Seasonality plays here too: advertiser budgets swell in the fourth quarter and around major retail and sports calendars, so the same inventory earns more when demand peaks. Publishers who understand their demand mix can plan around these cycles instead of being surprised by them.

Protecting the rate long-term

The fastest way to raise this month's eCPM is often the fastest way to lower next quarter's: loosening category blocks, inflating completion numbers with accidental clicks, tolerating borderline demand. Advertiser algorithms forgive nothing; they reprice your inventory on behavioral evidence continuously.

The durable levers are slower and stronger: keep the audience engaged, keep placements honest, keep demand direct, and review per-placement reporting weekly so decay is caught while it is still cheap to fix. Watch completion quality and post-ad behavior as leading indicators — when they slide, bids follow within weeks, and rebuilding a damaged reputation with buyers takes far longer than protecting a healthy one. Publishers who run rewarded this way stop asking what the format pays on average — their own numbers become the answer others compare against.
