Is CTV right for your app? An honest assessment

Connected TV is a powerful channel — and like every powerful channel, it is wrong for some advertisers right now. This article gives you the assessment we would give you across a table: which app categories win on CTV, what readiness actually requires, and the signs that say wait.

The app categories that win on CTV

The strongest CTV performers share a trait: their product makes sense in a lean-back, living-room moment. Games dominate — the couch is a gaming context, and install response from TV exposure is well documented. Entertainment, streaming and content apps are a natural fit. Food delivery, dating, sports and betting apps (where licensed) perform strongly in evening dayparts. Finance and utility apps win when the message is trust and scale rather than immediate response.

What these categories have in common is a broad enough audience to use household-level targeting well, and a value proposition that survives being told in fifteen seconds with sound.

Signs you are ready for CTV

Four green flags. Your mobile channels work: you have a proven cost per install and know your user quality — CTV amplifies working funnels, it does not fix broken ones. You have video creative, or the willingness to make it: the channel is video-only. You can define success numerically: a target cost per incremental install, a scan rate, a lift metric. And you can fund a readable test: a budget concentrated enough to produce signal rather than noise.

A fifth, quieter flag: your mobile CPAs are rising and your lookalike audiences feel exhausted. That is precisely when an incremental, attention-rich channel earns its test.

Signs you should wait

Be honest about the red flags. If your app does not yet retain users, CTV will deliver expensive churn — fix retention first. If you cannot define what a successful test looks like, you are not ready to buy one. If your budget cannot concentrate on one audience and geography for several weeks, the test will produce anecdotes, not answers. And if your entire acquisition model depends on last-click attribution, the channel will look worse than it performs, because much of its effect arrives through cross-device paths that last-click cannot see.

Waiting is not failing. CTV will still be there in two quarters; a burned budget will not.

The budget reality check

CTV entry is more accessible than its reputation, but it is not a hundred-dollar channel. A readable test needs enough impressions against a tight audience to measure incrementality — what that means in absolute terms depends on your geography and audience, and any honest partner will size it for your case rather than quote a universal minimum.

The frame that helps: you are not buying installs, you are buying an answer. The question "does CTV work for my app" has a price; a well-designed test is the cheapest way to pay it exactly once.

The creative reality check

CTV runs 15- and 30-second video, full-screen, sound on. If you have mobile video creative, adaptation is days of work — resize, relayout text for couch distance, remix audio to carry the message, add a QR end card. If you have no video at all, that is the real cost of entry, and it should be priced into your decision.

The bar is also higher than social: television viewers are trained on professional production. Creative that looks like a screen recording reads as cheap on a 55-inch display. This does not require agency budgets — it requires care.

The verdict framework

Score yourself: proven mobile funnel, video creative or willingness to produce it, a numerically defined success metric, a concentrate-able test budget, rising mobile CPAs. Four or five: run the test. Three: run it with tighter scope. Two or fewer: fix the foundations and revisit.

And if you want the assessment done for you — that is a conversation we have weekly. Register as an advertiser, share your app, your numbers and your target market, and we will tell you straight whether CTV is your next channel or your next quarter's channel.
