Push vs In-App vs Native Traffic: Which Format Fits Your App

Mobadly Media Buying Team · · 6 min read

Media buyers argue about formats the way chefs argue about knives — mostly from habit. Push, in-app and native are not rivals; they reach the same user in three different mental states. Pick wrong and even great creative dies. Pick right and a mediocre funnel can survive long enough to be fixed. Here is the honest comparison we use when planning campaigns.

Three formats, three user mindsets

Format choice is really mindset choice. A push notification interrupts: the user is doing something else when your message arrives on the device. An in-app ad accompanies: the user is inside an app session they chose, and your ad shares that context. A native ad blends: the user is consuming content and your message is formatted as part of the feed.

Interruption, accompaniment, blending — each state filters who responds. Push attracts impulsive clicks and fast decisions; in-app attracts users already in an app-using mood; native attracts readers with slightly more patience. Neither is "better." The question is which mindset your funnel is built to convert.

Push traffic: strengths and limits

Push (including in-page push) delivers volume fast and cheap, with CPC economics that make small test budgets meaningful. It is the natural habitat of velocity verticals — sweepstakes, vouchers, and aggressive utility installs — where offers rotate weekly and speed of testing decides profit.

The limits are just as real. Push audiences fatigue, so creative rotation is not a nice-to-have but a survival mechanism — we rotate push creatives weekly and cap frequency to protect conversion. Push also skews Android and older devices in many GEOs, which is fine for some offers and fatal for others. And because the click is impulsive, your pre-lander has about two seconds to frame the offer before the user bounces.

In-app traffic: scale with control

In-app inventory — banners, interstitials, rewarded video, playables — is where serious mobile scale lives. Sessions are long, targeting by device and GEO is precise, and attribution through an MMP is clean because everything happens inside the app ecosystem. For dating apps and mobile games, in-app is usually the backbone format: the user is already in an app, so the install ask is a small step, not a context switch.

Quality control is the trade-off. In-app attracts the heaviest fraud pressure of the three formats — click injection, install farms, emulator traffic — so source-level filtering and MMP validation are mandatory. The upside of that discipline: once placements are scored on post-install events, in-app gives the most predictable economics per placement of any format we buy.

Native: the quiet converter

Native gets dismissed as slow and expensive, and for pure install velocity it is. Its strength is different: native reaches users in a reading mindset, which suits offers that need explanation — financial products, nutra trials, anything with a story. A native click arrives at your pre-lander already primed to read, so pre-lander funnels convert at rates push can only envy.

The cost is speed and volume: native CPMs are higher, approval processes stricter, and scaling takes weeks of placement whitelisting rather than days of budget increases. We treat native as the quality lane in a multi-format mix — the format that keeps working while flashier channels burn out.

Matching format to vertical

After running these formats across our eight verticals, the patterns hold up well:

A simple three-lane test plan

Do not marry a format on theory. Structure a three-lane test: same GEO, comparable daily budget per format, identical conversion event in the MMP. Give each lane enough spend to reach a statistically meaningful number of billable events — a handful of conversions proves nothing. Then compare not the click or install price, but cost per paying event per format.

Usually one lane wins clearly, one is marginal, one is dead — scale the winner, retest the marginal lane with new creative, kill the dead one without ceremony.
